Recognized as the oldest living person in the world during a period lasting from late January of 2007 until her death in August of that year, this Japanese Supercentenarian lived well past her 114th birthday.
In her early years, she supported her family by working as a produce merchant at a Japanese coal mine.
In 2005, following the death of Ura Koyama, she became the oldest living Japanese citizen. Two years later, when American Supercentenarian Emma Tillman passed away, she earned the title of world's oldest living person.
Her husband died when she was still young, and she later outlived four out of five of her children. At the end of her life, she was living in a nursing community in Keijuen, Akaike, Japan.
She and fellow Japanese Supercentenarian Misao Okawa were two of the world's longest-living people. In 2013, when she was 115 years old, Okawa earned the distinction of being the oldest woman alive.
