Abolitionist best known for being the Editor of the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator. He was a founding member of the American Anti-Slavery Society.
He performed several odd jobs to help support his family as a young man, such as delivering wood and selling lemonade.
He is remembered for his vocal support of black rights as well as women's suffrage and has a memorial erected in his honor in Boston.
He and his wife Helen had five sons and two daughters. On the occasion of his 200th birthday, his descendants gathered in Boston to discuss his legacy.
Prominent black thinker Frederick Douglass spoke in positive remembrance of him at a Washington D.C. church.
