Brazilian actor and singer who is best known for his songs "BR-3," "Podes Crer, Amizade" and "Me libertei" as well as his roles in Pixote, The Formula and Carandiru. He is also known as one of the first artists to introduce soul music and funk in Brazilian music.
At age 11, he ran away from home and ended up in Rio de Janeiro where he became a street kid and made a living selling peanuts and shining shoes. At 18, he served in the Deodoro School of Parachuting alongside future tv presenter Silvio Santos.
In 1970, he won the Brazilian stage of the V International Song Festival with the soul song "BR-3."
His father was Guyanese and his mother was Brazilian. From 1977 to 1983, he was married to Arlete Salles. He has a son named Lincoln Tornado and three other children.
He has performed alongside soul singer Tim Maia.
