Teresa of Avila was a Spanish nun, mystic, theologian and saint born on March 28, 1515 in Spain. She is best known for co-founding the Discalced Carmelite Order, a reform movement within the Carmelite Order of the Catholic Church. She is also known for her writings, which include her autobiography, The Life of Teresa of Jesus, and her spiritual treatise, The Interior Castle. She was canonized in 1622 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970.
