He was born in North London in 1946 and was a promising tennis player as a teenager who in his peak, won a junior prize at Wimbledon. He began working as a clothing salesman for a coat maker as a young man, and went on to set up Stephen Marks London in the late 1960's where he made tailored suits and coats to his designs. He quickly learned the tricks of wholesaling after seeing fashion trends in Paris that he knew would do well in the UK. He arranged to import and sell these trends in England, and by 1972 he had established the French Connection women's label. The business expanded into menswear in 1976, and today the brand operates in 30 countries. Marks is a member of the All-England Club and has helped establish tennis academies throughout the UK and Israel to develop young players. He was also involved in financing the films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Layer Cake and Kick-Ass as well as holding substantial shares in Hard Rock Café. He was married to Nicole Farhi, a French fashion designer, and the couple had one daughter before eventually separating.
