Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774 in Ivy, VA. He is best known for his exploration and mapping of the American Northwest with his partner William Clark. The two of them set out on their expedition in 1804 and returned in 1806, having mapped the area and made contact with many Native American tribes. Their journey was a major contribution to the knowledge of the American West and helped to open up the region for further exploration and settlement.
