Koichi Wakata is a Japanese astronaut born on August 1, 1963. He is the first Japanese astronaut to work on the assembly of the International Space Station, and has been involved in numerous space missions since then. He has been a part of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency since 1985 and has been a part of the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery, the Soyuz TMA-11, and the Expedition 39/40.
