Julio Ponce Lerou is a Chilean businessman who was born in Santiago, Chile. He is the former son-in-law of the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and has derived his fortune from his stake in Sociedad de Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM), a publicly-traded chemicals and mining company that was privatized by Pinochet's government in the 1980s. Ponce was the chairman of SQM for almost 40 years, during which time it became one of the world's largest producers of potassium nitrate, iodine and lithium, which are used in fertilizers and LCD screens. In April 2015, Ponce resigned as chairman of SQM, citing personal reasons.
