John Casper was born on July 9, 1943 in Greenville, SC. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel who served on four spaceflights. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a decorated pilot. He was a mission specialist on the STS-36 mission in 1990, the STS-54 mission in 1993, the STS-62 mission in 1994, and the STS-77 mission in 1996. He was also a recipient of the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal.
