He was encouraged to pursue a career in theater by his school teacher, and after two failed attempts, he was accepted into the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school at the age of 19. He was well-known for his capacity for work, and he starred in many plays and films, including the world premiere of Eugene O'Neill's 'Long Days Journey Into Night' and Alan Jay Lerner's and Frederick Loewe's play 'My Fair Lady'. He also directed two films, 'Bokhandlaren som slutade bada' and 'Ministern'. He worked with Ingmar Bergman on several films, including 'Kvinnors väntan', 'Sommarnattens leende', and 'Fanny och Alexander'. In 1982, he returned to the Royal Dramatic Theatre and performed in plays such as 'King Lear', 'Markurells i Wadköping', and 'Tartuffe'.

In 1960, Kulle married Louise Hermelin (born 1939), daughter of cavalry captain, Baron Carl-Magnus Hermelin and Ann-Marie Sourander. They divorced in 1968. In 1976, Kulle married the Actress Anne Nord. Kulle died in Gregersboda, Sweden in 1997 of bone cancer.
