James Chaney was an African American civil rights activist born in Meridian, Mississippi on May 30, 1943. He was a field worker for the Congress of Racial Equality and was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan while working in Mississippi to organize voter education classes. His death was a major catalyst for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
