Italo Balbo was an Italian pilot and political leader born on June 6, 1896 in Ferrara, Italy. He was instrumental in the development of Fascist Italy's Air Force, and was a key figure in the rise of the Fascist regime. He was also a successful military leader, leading a squadron of 24 planes on a trans-Atlantic flight in 1933. He was later appointed Governor-General of Libya, and was killed in 1940 during a bombing mission.
