German conductor and composer who is known as the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic between 1922 and 1945, and from 1952 to 1954. He was also a guest conductor at the Vienna Philharmonic.
He was given a musical education at an early age.
Although not a fan of Nazism, he was the leading conductor to remain in Germany during the Nazi regime. Despite his open opposition to antisemitism and the Nazi symbolism, the regime did not seek to suppress him, at Joseph Goebbels' insistence, for propaganda reasons. He had a strong connection to nature, and saw music in a similar light. His style of conducting has been regarded as rather unique.
His father was Johann Michael Adolf Furtwängler. He was married to Zitla Lund from 1923 to 1943. He married Elisabeth Furtwängler in 1943. He has two children, Andreas Furtwängler and Dagmar Bellová.
In 1920, he was appointed conductor of the Berlin Staatskapelle succeeding Richard Strauss.
