Victor Varconi was born Mihály Várkonyi on the Hungarian/Rumanian border in 1891. After training at Budapest's commercial college and dramatic school, he rose to fame as a matinée idol on the Transylvanian stage. He changed his name to Michael Varkonyi and branched out into German/Austrian co-productions before arriving in America in 1924. He was given his American film debut by Cecil B. DeMille and went on to appear in many silent films, including Chicago (1927) and The Divine Lady (1929). His thick accent forced him to take on ethnic character roles in sound films, often playing foreign or royal dignitaries, continental cads or cultivated villains. He also appeared in many of DeMille's sound epics and wrote for radio and stage. Varconi published his memoirs shortly before his death in 1976 at age 85.
