He is the seventh of nine children and graduated from Grant High School, where his father was a teacher and basketball coach. After completing his undergraduate degree in theatre at Lewis and Clark College and receiving his MFA in acting at Temple University, Ted played semi-pro basketball in Germany. He then moved to New York City and Los Angeles to pursue theatre, commercial work, and television appearances. He is proud to have achieved his goal of appearing on Seinfeld before it went off the air.
