Muhammad Ahmad was born on August 12, 1844 in Sudan. He was a religious leader of the Samaniyya order in Sudan from 1881-1885 and in 1881, he declared himself to be the Mahdi or the messianic redeemer of the Islamic faith. He led a successful revolt against the Turco-Egyptian rule in Sudan and established a new state in 1885. He died in June 1885, shortly after his victory.
