He is best known for his work with Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band and Utley is the musical director of the band. Utley was a member of the house band for Atlantic Records and backed artists including Aretha Franklin, the Allman Brothers, and Jerry Jeff Walker and also played with Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge. Utley was recruited by Jerry Jeff Walker to play keyboard instruments on Jimmy Buffett's debut major label album A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean in 1973. He began touring with the Coral Reefers in 1983. Michael Utley has released the albums Mad Music MCA, Jubilee, Heat, Club Trini, Back in Town, and Margarita Café: Late Night Live with Robert Greenridge as Club Trini.
