American politician and attorney who served as the 48th governor of Pennsylvania beginning in 2023. His political career began when he took a position as a legislative assistant for Carl Levin, and he has served in a variety of roles since. He is a conservative Jew who keeps kosher.
When he was growing up he began the worldwide letter-writing program known as Children for Avi. He majored in political science at the University of Rochester. During his time working on Capitol Hill, he earned a JD from Georgetown University Law School. He played basketball in high school.
He is a member of the Democratic Party. He also served as attorney general of Pennsylvania in the 2010's. He was selected as one of Pennsylvania's electors to vote in the Electoral College during the 2020 presidential election.
His father was a pediatrician and his mother was a teacher. He married his high school sweetheart Lori in 1997, and the couple has four children.
He is the third Jewish governor in Pennsylvania's history, following Milton Shapp and Ed Rendell. He was one of the first politicians to back Barack Obama for the 2008 presidential election. When Shapiro ran for Pennsylvania Governor in 2022, both Obama and Joe Biden rallied to help his campaign.
