James L Farmer Jr. was an American civil rights activist born on January 12, 1920 in Marshall, TX. He was best known for leading the Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses to challenge segregation laws, and for helping to establish the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), an organization dedicated to achieving racial equality through nonviolent protest. Farmer's work was instrumental in the advancement of civil rights in the United States.
