Dale Gardner was a former NASA astronaut born on November 8, 1948 in Minnesota. He was part of the Space Shuttle Challenger mission STS-8 in 1983, making him the first person to ever retrieve a satellite in space. He was also the first person to ever perform an extra-vehicular activity (EVA) in space. Gardner was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1984 for his contributions to the space program.
