She had a difficult upbringing, but managed to attend Beverly Hills High School and the University of California, Irvine, where she studied theatre. She worked as a waitress and clown while attempting to break into film and television, and eventually joined the prestigious Theatre West company in Hollywood. She also had a successful career as a casting director, casting a number of feature films and television series. As an actress, she was best known for her role as the acerbic Ferengi feminist "Ishka" on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). She was also an acting coach and lyricist. In 2001, she had a daughter, but was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer four months later and passed away at the age of 45.

Adams worked in casting TV series such as Third Rock From the Sun and Eerie, Indiana, and features including American Heart (1992) and Home Room (2002). Until her death, she served as casting Director for That '70s Show.

2004

Adams was married to actor/writer Jim Beaver in 1989; their daughter Madeline was born in 2001. Adams, though a non-smoker, died of lung cancer on March 3, 2004, at the age of 46, in Los Angeles, California. Her husband's memoir, Life's That Way, details her last few months.
