Boris Volynov was born on December 18, 1934 in Russia and is the first halakhic Jewish cosmonaut. He was born to a Jewish mother, making him the first Jewish cosmonaut to be recognized by the Jewish community. Volynov has made numerous contributions to the space program, including being the first person to fly a spacecraft manually and the first to survive a re-entry capsule failure. He has also been awarded numerous honors for his achievements.
