Howard Rollins was an American actor born on October 17, 1950 in Baltimore, MD. He is best known for his role as Investigator Virgil Tibbs on the television series In the Heat of the Night, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. He also earned an Oscar nomination for his work in the 1981 film Ragtime. Rollins passed away in 1996 at the age of 45.
