He eventually worked his way up from sales, marketing, and research to become president of ESPN Inc. and ABC's sports division. Bodenheimer was named ESPN's president in late 1998 and ABC Sports' president about five years later. He is credited with launching various ESPN satellite networks and programming, including ESPNHD, ESPN Plus, ESPN PPV, ESPN3, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, among others. Under Bodenheimer, ESPN and ESPN2 cracked almost 100 million households.
