American ornithologist who is thought of as one of the originators of the modern field guide for identifying wildlife. He authored books such as Bird Studies With a Camera as well as articles in publications like National Geographic Magazine.
He was born in West Englewood and worked as an assistant at the American Museum of Natural History beginning in 1888.
In 1917, the National Academy of Sciences awarded him the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal.
