He made his American stage debut in By the Waters of Babylon at the Geffen Play House in Los Angeles. After a break from acting, he returned to Mexico and starred in the movie Sexo, pudor y lágrimas, which broke Mexican box-office records. He then returned to America and made his American debut in the television movie In the Time of the Butterflies. He went on to play Fidel Castro in Che: Part One and Che: Part Two and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in A Better Life in 2012.
