Christian missionary who had a ministry among the Native Americans in New Jersey, and dedicated much of his life to their education.
He was expelled from Yale University before turning to missionary work.
His expulsion from Yale inspired disgruntled Presbyterians of New York and New Jersey to found the College of New Jersey, which eventually became Princeton.
He was orphaned when he was 14 years old.
