He was a former Major League Baseball third baseman and outfielder who played for the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies. After his retirement, he became a scout for the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves. He was the first African-American to play for the Cincinnati Reds and the first African-American to play for the St. Louis Cardinals.
