He left a career in architecture to pursue stage acting, and eventually made his Broadway debut in 1913. He also appeared in a number of silent films, and was signed by Paramount for character roles in sound pictures. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, he appeared in a variety of films, including Captains Courageous (1937), Meet John Doe (1941), Sergeant York (1941), and Mildred Pierce (1945). His last two films were The Wings of Eagles (1957) and The Last Hurrah (1958). He passed away in 1967 at the age of 85.
