Bernard Sherman, commonly known as Barry Sherman, grew up working his uncle Louis Lloyd Winter at his pharmaceutical company Empire Laboratories. It was here where Barry acquired the training and knowledge that would aide his future development of Apotex Inc. Having earned a doctorate in rocket science at MIT, Sherman took his mother's life savings to purchase his uncle's drug company in 1967. This company became the base of the foundation of one of the leading generic pharmaceutical companies in Canada in 1974. To date, Apotex employs over 6,000 people in 21 facilities. The company produces 300 medications that are exported to 115 countries worldwide, generating over $1 billion in sales. Despite their work force, a great deal of Apotex's work is done in courtrooms where the company is engaged in legal battles for their efforts to market cheaper, generic versions of brand name drugs. Apart from building a major addition to the geriatric Baycrest Centre, and to other Toronto-area community centers and hospitals, Bernard Sherman is also known for his considerable charitable donations. As for his private life, he was married to Honey Sherman. They had 4 children together.
Barry and Honey were murdered under extremely bizarre circumstances in December 2017. The case is still unsolved as of this writing.
