The film came under fire for casting Perrineau, a light-skinned, straight-haired, biracial Actress for the role of Shana, a character who had a dark complexion and afro-textured hair. The film was released on October 23, 2015, and was a box office flop, only making $1.4 million in its opening weekend. In July 2014, she was cast in Drake Doremus's film Equals. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2015. Perrineau had a small role in the film Passengers, released on December 21, 2016.
