Andy Hertzfeld was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in April 1953. He was a member of the original Apple Macintosh development team. Hertzfeld went to work for Apple Computer after buying an Apple II.

From 1979 to 1984 he worked as a designer for the Macintosh system software. After leaving Apple, he went on to co-found the companies Radius in 1986, General Magic in 1990, and Eazel in 1999. Hertzfeld helped Mitch Kapor promote open source software with the Open Source Applications Foundation in 2002.
